Uncleaned ventilation ductwork

Uncleaned ventilation ductwork

Richard Norman was recently asked:

In your experience, do you think that hospital Estate and Facility Management are fully aware of the growing evidence of the link between uncleaned ventilation ductwork systems and the incidents of HCAI’s?

His response:

Until Dr Shabha did all his work there was little awareness or understanding of how HCAIs were transmitted through the air conditioning systems.  He has shown that the kind of deposits found in these systems include human hair and skin flakes, ideal constituents on which micro-organisms can propagate.  As with all new information, it is taking a little time to see the evidence prompting action but there is a clear responsibility on Estate & Facilities Managers to implement cleaning regimes.

Why it is so important that ventilation systems or air conditioning are properly cleaned and maintained?

Dirty Ductwork

Dirty Ductwork

On a fundamental level, the NHS constitution requires that patients are treated by an organisation that provides its services in a clean and safe environment.  Uncleaned ventilation systems not only aid the spread of common infections like fire and the common cold but, as Dr Shabha has shown, play an important role in spreading the potentially fatal HCAIs.

With more hospitals becoming ‘airtight’ ventilation systems are relied on more and more to provide clean, unpolluted air.  They can only consistently delivery this if subjected to regular, thorough professional cleaning.

Can you tell us why it is so important that ventilation systems or air conditioning as it is often referred to are properly cleaned and maintained?

In order for hospitals and healthcare establishments to reduce the level of Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAI’s) what are the key areas within their estates that they should be focussing on?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Everyone knows that the last Government threw lots of money at the NHS for a deep cleaning blitz.  However, most of this was spent on general cleaning of wards, not specialist cleaning.  Dr Ghasson Shabha of the University of Birmingham has carried out considerable work on the link between ventilation systems and the spread of HCAI (Healthcare Associated Infections).  He has shown a clear link between the temperature and humidity conditions typically found in air conditioning ductwork and the growth and spread of these infections, notably MRSA and C diff.

General Ventilation System Cleaning

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

The lack of maintenance and cleaning of air conditioning systems is a major contributor to staff sickness by helping to spread common infections in the workplace often known as ‘Sick Building Syndrome’.

In order to ensure that conditions for building occupants are comfortable and safe there is a ‘duty of care’ requirement that ventilation systems are kept clean. (more…)
