What do FM’s really know about the Fire Safety Order?

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

In March this year, Indepth Hygiene carried out a Fire Safety awareness survey, to identify and understand some of the common misconceptions Facilities Management (FM’s) companies have about the Fire Safety Order. The survey aimed at outsourced Facilities and Building Managers; investigated whether the group fully understand their role and responsibilities under the law, for fire safety matters.

The survey has revealed some interesting results, which provide some real insight into what this sector really knows about the Fire Safety Order. It was an encouraging start to see that 90% of respondents were aware of the primary compliance requirements of the regulation, which outlines that a responsible person must be appointed to carry out a fire safety risk assessment and implement and maintain a fire management plan. It was also reassuring to note that 54.5% of FM’s understand that as an appointed responsible person, they could be liable for criminal prosecution if death or injury is caused by a fire from an extract duct. Why are Kitchen Grease Extract Systems not Classified as LEV’s?

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

The description of an LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) system as defined by the HSE is a system that uses extract ventilation to prevent, or reduce, the level of airborne hazardous substances from being breathed by people in the workplace.  Its function is to draw pollutants away from a process or operation that is likely to release hazardous substances into the air.  It consists of an inlet e.g. a hood placed around or close to the point of release of the substance.  This device is connected via extract ducting to discharge to atmosphere.

That’s exactly how one would describe a typical kitchen extract ventilation system: cooking appliances give off hazardous fumes which can be a combination of pollutants from gas burning units and hot grease laden vapours from the cooking, a canopy over the cooking units draws these hazardous substances away from the people in the kitchen (workplace) into extract ducting where it is drawn by fan to exhaust to atmosphere.

Do uncleaned grease extract systems also use more energy?

Friday, July 30th, 2010

YES! The more grease deposits are allowed to accumulate in the ducting, the harder the fan has to work to maintain extract efficiency, and therefore consumes more energy.

The legal requirement of the Fire Safety Order to clean extract systems to eliminate fire risk, to building occupants carries the additional benefit of reducing system energy costs.  There are both safety and economic benefits.
